Weber Summit S-420 LP Gas Grill - Stainless Steel Review

Weber Summit S-420 LP Gas Grill - Stainless SteelThe Weber Summit line of grills have a design flaw that Weber refuses to consider an issue.Whenever it rains, water runs down the back and enters the internal drip tray, and empties into a drip pan.The pan then overflows the greasy mess onto the cabinet floor. Furthermore, the drip pan cannot be easily removed without almost totally spilling the greasy mess.

Weber 2840301 Summit S-470 Natural Gas Tuck-Away Rotisserie Grill, Stainless Steel Review

Weber 2840301 Summit S-470 Natural Gas Tuck-Away Rotisserie Grill, Stainless SteelWe purchased this to replace our trusty Genesis Silver B with cast-iron grates. After 10 years of frequent use, I was looking for something with more flexibility and capacity. I also had grown tired of the rust issues with the cast iron grates (yes, I know about 'seasoning'), but wanted to retain the high heat advantages that cast iron offers. The Summit S-470 has more than met my expectations. If you plan to feed a small army, consider the 600-series, but for most backyard uses the 400-series has *plenty* of usable grill area.

Key advantages:
* High-quality stainless construction. Unlike the lower-cost Weber grills and virtually *all* of the competitive alternatives, the Summit grills are made mostly of 304-grade stainless steel. This has much higher nickel content, and as a result is substantially more corrosion resistant (and more expensive). The easiest way to identify cheap stainless is that it is magnetic (so take a magnet when you compare grills). Improved corrosion resistance means that the exterior will remain beautiful for years, and the grates will last indefinitely.
* 7 independent burners on the S-470 (in addition to the side burner). Four main burners, one searing burner, one burner for the built-in stainless smoke box, and one infrared burner on the rear cover. All except the infrared burner run front-to-back. With most of them active, the grill reaches >700 degrees F in ten minutes. This provides incredible flexibility. Extremely high direct heat, completely indirect heat, crispy skin on rotisserie, lots of smoke at low heat, only part of the grill at high heat, etc... - no problem. You are limited only by your imagination, not your tools.
* Extremely thick (9.5mm) grates provide excellent searing and heat retention. These work at least as well as the cast-iron grates on our old grill, but are much easier to maintain.
* High double-wall lid. This makes the grill space under the warming rack actually usable! The double-wall substantially improves performance in cold or rainy weather, and requires less gas to keep the grill hot under all conditions.
* Pop-up rotisserie. It is extremely easy to use, and quickly folds away in a weather-protected stainless pocket. Other thoughtful touches include obvious hanging storage areas for the spit and spikes in the cabinet.
* Rodent-resistant cabinet. The cabinet has double-walled doors with secure magnetic latches, lots of ventilation, and no gaping holes.

Issues:
* Very Expensive. Even on sale, the S-470 is about 3x the cost of a Genesis grill. Only you can decide if the extra flexibility is worth the extra cost. In our case I expect to get 15+ years out of this grill, and the cost is comparable to some good-quality kitchen appliances. However, the very high cost is the main reason I give this grill only 4 stars.
* Side burner has limited heat range. Presumably to prevent blow-outs that would cause safety issues, the range on the side burner is only hot to very hot. Simmering at low heat is basically impossible. For my next trick I plan to try adding a thick solid burner plate, but for now the side burner mostly does not get used.
* Lighted controls are mostly a gimmick. Fortunately they are LEDs, so corrosion should not be an issue and the batteries last for many hours. However, the lights only work on the four main burner controls, and are irritatingly bright when you happen to glance at the gap between the knob and the cabinet while reaching for the control. I added some white shrink tubing to the end of the LEDs to eliminate the latter issue, but overall the lighted controls offer limited benefit.
* Several other reviews mention a design flaw in the Summit grills which allows rainwater to flow from the back of the grill into the grease pan (making a big mess in the floor of the cabinet). Fortunately there is a simple fix. On our S-470 I put an aluminum flashing on the rear of the case using one of the bolts on each end of the grill box, similar to the way Weber handles water flow on the front. A 12" wide roll of aluminum flashing was only ten dollars at Lowes, and I cut it with scissors to fit. Now even if I forget to reinstall the cover, no water drips into the grease pan. This is not an issue with the Weber Genesis grills because the lid design is completely different (but one of the trade-offs is much lower interior space). Weber really should make something like this a running production change.
* Do *NOT* buy the Weber-brand grill cover. I like most of Weber's stuff, but their covers are very poor quality. Buy the Veranda BBQ Cart Cover instead. The 'Large' size fits the Summit 400-series perfectly, and the construction and design are far superior to the Weber covers.

Other considerations:
* These puppies use LOTS of gas! I am very glad that we were able to easily pipe natural gas to a convenient location. I can hardly imagine how fast we would be running through propane at >3x the cost!!
* If you are evaluating the stainless Genesis models, you really should consider the S-450 or S-470. The construction is substantially better and the finish will be much easier to maintain. Basically I would recommend sticking with the less expensive porcelain models, or stepping-up to the Summit grills. In addition to better materials, the front-to-back burners offer much more flexibility and control, and the side table is not covered with knobs.
* Check pricing. I buy a lot of stuff at Amazon, but we were able to find this grill for substantially (~20%) less at another reputable online vendor.
* The natural gas hose is quite thick and heavy, is apparently armored inside the PVC exterior coating, and comes with a good-quality brass 1/2" quick-disconnect. The connector on the end of the quick-disconnect is a female 1/2" IPS thread (i.e., standard steel pipe thread), so you need a male 1/2" IPS thread on the end of your supply line. Be sure to put a "O W G" (Oil/Water/Gas) rated ball valve immediately before the hose connection, and only use pipe dope or Teflon tape rated for use with gas.
* In California, galvanized pipe is *required* for outdoor gas use. According to PG&E, the western gas supply has very low levels of sulfur, so the old concerns about flaking and corrosion inside galvanized pipe are not an issue here in California.
* For rare situations where you need more grill capacity, consider the relatively inexpensive Rib-O-Lator. This is essentially a ferris-wheel with stainless trays, and will hold an amazing amount of food (and still leave parts of the grill available). There is at least one Rib-O-Lator (or Rib-O-Wheel) YouTube video with the Summit S-470, and the tall lid clearly helps. We use it mostly for ribs (surprise!), and ours fits easily inside the bottom cabinet when not in use.
* Not 100% made in USA. Several of the boxes inside the crate were clearly labeled "Made in China," including the rotisserie and both tables.
* Remove the door handles and the doors from the cabinet before removing the protective plastic coating. The doors snap-out easily if you depress the top pin, and the plastic coating is much easier to remove completely if the handles are not in the way. Each handle is held on by two Phillips-head screws and is very easy to reinstall.
* The crate weighs about 260 lbs, but if you remove the various boxes from inside the cabinet and fire-box, two people can remove the shell from the pallet. After that, you can easily roll the grill on any hard surface, and assembly is straightforward. The most tedious part of "assembly" was removing the protective plastic coating and collapsing all of the cardboard debris.Updated July 2010

We use this grill about two or three times a week, and remain very happy. I would definitely buy this again. I've added some photos to illustrate the modifications referenced in the original review. Note that if you regularly use the smoker, the exterior stainless will inevitably get discolored near the right-side and front edges of the cover.

Weber 6431 Charcoal Grill Tool Holder Review

Weber 6431 Charcoal Grill Tool HolderMoney well spent.I never was impressed with the tool holder from Weber that is made out of wire. The wire version is 1/3 the price, but you get what you pay for.I use my Weber kettle as a low temperature smoker (250 degrees), and it's vital to keep the temp constant for 6-8 hours. My initial concern was the the tool holder would cause an air leak between the bottom and lid, and create a problem, but the fit is tight as ever, and my latest smoke with this tool holder in place was the same as before using it.HIGHLY recommended addition to the Weber, so spend the extra money on this version.

Weber Baby Q (Q 100) Portable Gas Grill Review

Weber Baby Q Portable Gas GrillSummary: Easy to assemble, easy to start, great grill marks, easy to clean, size is medium (4 steaks or 12 thighs) seems small till you open the lid.

Assembly: Simple: Attach lid w/2 pins, screw handle on lid, slide cap on regulator, then slide in grease pan.

Tip: I really urge you to buy a hose adapter and hook up to a larger tank, but if you have to use smaller tanks it uses the long 14oz tanks sold in the hardware department, or remove the outside screw to the tank holder ring and bend it out so you can use the regular 16.4 oz tanks from the camping department.

StartUp: I am still amazed, turn regulator knob to start and push the ignitor and it lights up!

Break in: None..but the grill is NOT nonstick,Just wash the grill before the first use. (It is coated to prevent rust, not to be non-stick), so use oil on the food. Heat up the grill first for 10 or 15 minutes to get hot and oil grate to prevent sticking. I talked at length with Weber about the cooking grate and you do not season this grate!

Cooking: Anything you want to cook fast, GO HIGH...burgers, steaks, shrimp...great grill marks. (I just couldn't make a good steak on a portable gas grill until now). Great taste! Anything else, GO LOW...dogs, brats, potato wedges, corn on the cob. Always cook chicken on low or skins will burn and stick. You can also just mix the oil in with a marinade.

Flare up: Almost none. I intentionally cooked very fatty thighs and got very little flare up, but did get lots of splatter making the chicken turn dark, but it cooked off. Just trim a little...

Clean up: Just scrape, burn, and scrape grate again with brass bristles. If that doesn't work don't be scared to just wash it. For theinside I just scrape down towards the bottom with a piece of cardboard so everything falls out the bottom hole into the grease pan. This is very handy.

It stays cool underneath!BBQ on any surface!!!

Hello again, it's been 18 months since I did this review and after being abused all summer and winter and another summer it still works the same as the first day! I'veused mine 2 or 3 times a week in the summer and at least once a week for football and NASCAR. I heat my grate for 10 minutes, brush it, take it off and spray it with a garden hose (every time), heat again for 5 minutes then spray with oil and still not one speck of rust. How you clean yours is up to you, all I'm saying is it's virtually rustproof.
TIPS: I put it in a plastic storage container with all the stuff that goes with it, then put it on the pontoon boat, take it back out and bbq right on top of the plastic container! Who needs expensive carriers when you can buy a wheeled plastic storage container and use it as a bbq table too. I also put a little thermometer on the front top, drill one hole and it screws right on. Oh,and one last thing, I only used $27.00 of propane the whole time (3 tanks)..how bout that!Three years and still goin strong.I haven't replaced anything!
My other BIG Charbroil Gas grill has since rusted away and needs new grills and drip plates.

Four years and I still haven't had to replace anything. It still works as good as the day I bought it and the cast iron porcelain-enameled cooking grate still has NO RUST!

Five years and I still haven't had to replace anything. It still works as good as the day I bought it and the cast iron porcelain-enameled cooking grate still has NO RUST!

Weber 7470001 Summit S-670 Natural Gas Grill, Stainless Steel Review

Weber 7470001 Summit S-670 Natural Gas Grill, Stainless SteelIf you read all of the reviews you will have noted the water leak problem. I figured it was worth the purchase even with the design flaw because the grill has great features for the price. I researched solutions for the leaking and then emailed support to ask them for advice. I was surprised when they offered a cover but recommended not to install flashing because "they don't know how it will effect grilling". They have known about the leakage for more than 3 years. With $2,000 grills you think they might explore some solutions other than a cover. People who spend this much on a grill are likely to be the same people who are willing to grill in the rain.

Anyhow, I bought some flashing and some high temp flu tape (highest rated) and flashed the 1" gap between the grill and the cart. Even with this mod, set up was quick and no problems except for the quick connect on the side burner. It just won't snap in for me. No bother, I didn't buy the grill to use the side burner.

No problem with grilling at all. It heats up very quickly and the sear section is incredible. I love the smoke box. It takes a while to get the timing down on the smoker. I have been using the grill for a while now and have no regrets at all. Lights up perfectly, heats well, and easy to clean. The only problem is cleaning the grill with hairy arms. They look like I have a perm. Perhaps time for a longer handle on my brush.

Weber 2005 Model 841001 22 1/2-Inch Performer Charcoal Grill With Touch and Go Propane Ignition Review

Weber 2005 Model 841001 22 1/2 inch Performer Charcoal Grill With Touch and Go Propane IgnitionI have used a Weber One Touch Gold for many years, but the truth of the matter is that in Northern Michigan winter, it is frequently more than I care to attempt to try to get the fire going. Nomatter whether I use the chimney or parrafin starters, that cold wind does not get me enthused to charcoal grill in January.

So my sons gave me a Performer as a surprise gift (Bless those lads!!)! And, like most Weber products, it's a winner.

ASSEMBLY: It took less than twenty minutes for my older son and I to assemble it. The directions are crystal clear, the parts are well and carefully packed, and the only item not included is the small propane container, which is readily available at hardware stores. (Our local Home Depot had four packs for just under $10.00.)

QUALITY: This is a solidly built unit. The kettle bolts to the frame with four large bolts, and the adjoining work surface is similarly attached. While some have complained that it is not as good as its predecessor, I can vouch for the overall quality of design and construction.

PERFORMANCE: With the gift came a demand for "RIBS!!" There were enough people here to warrant a comparison test with my old One Touch Gold. The Performer had a fire ready to go about 8 minutes before the One Touch was ready, and the fire was hotter by over 50 degrees as measured on the thermometers in the handles. (I believe that the air vents at the bottom are larger in the Performer, which would account for this.)

The work surface adjacent to the kettle is worth the additional cost of this unit over the One Touch. No longer is there a need to balance a tray of goodies on the rim of the kettle with one hand, while trying to place food items on the grill with the other. The tip out charcoal storeage bin is another neat feature.

CONCLUSION: I am an admitted Weberholic. I don't think that they make a grill that is less than excellent, and I cannot imagine any feature that a charcoal griller would want on a grill that this unit lacks. So, now there are four Weber Grills on the deck, and while I will still use the gas grills a lot, I know that this coming January will see charcoal grilling in Northern Michigan.

Thanks, Weber!!

ADDENDUM: I got some hardwood charcoal (not briquets!) and have done burgers, chops and steaks. The fire is super hot and lasts about 40 minutes, but the flavor of the meat is superb!!

Weber Q 220 Portable Propane Gas Barbecues Review

Weber Q 220 Portable Propane Gas BarbecuesI concur with other reviewer's assessment - this is a great little grill. I bought it as a temporary hold-over until the backyard remodel with outdoor kitchen is complete. I was initially concerned about the relatively low Btu output, but I must say it sears steaks very well. Definitely exceeds my expectations.

I also bought the cart stand, cover, and Weber's cast iron griddle. I use the griddle to do oven-roasted potatoes, and the cart is very nice. NOTE: The cart comes with a propane tank hose, no need to order separately.

Weber 1427001 Performer Charcoal Grill, Green Review

Weber 1427001 Performer Charcoal Grill, GreenI've had a variety of grilling / bbq products. Primarily Weber, given their history of solid products and great customer service.

I've always been a charcoal purist. Apartment living, however, has made me consider propane as a primary heat source for grilling. I recently bought the Weber Q220. It's a nice product, but it just doesn't get as hot as I need it to. So I sold my Q220 and decided to go with what I really wanted, which was this Weber Performer.

It's not petite - it takes up a good 3-4 feet width-wise and it's about 3 feet high.

Charcoal had always previously required me to get a chimney starter, as I'm not into soaking my briquets with lighter fluid. That meant a lot of smoke and wait time as I waited for the coals to get hot.

The Weber performer, however, uses the little, easy to find propane tanks (hardware stores, your local drugstore's seasonal merch section) to blast the coals with propane-powered fire in 10 mins. The coals are ashen-grey and ready to go. The grill gets over 600+ degrees F so you can really get a solid sear on whatever you're cooking.

The whole setup is solid and well thought out. The one touch lighting system works like a breeze and the cook-top / prep area is a huge benefit, as is the tilt-out charcoal holder.

The only thing I'd suggest: google Craycort cast-iron grates and get a 22.5 inch cast-iron grate for this. It's a bit expensive at $85 but it's worth EVERY PENNY. If you've done a lot of grilling, you know you need cast iron to retain heat and really sear your food. I did and it makes this setup into the ne plus ultra of all charcoal grills and remedies the only weakness of this setup, which is the stainless steel grates that it comes with. Ditch those for Craycort's cast iron grates. You'll be glad you did.

I love this product as much as I can love an inanimate product. And that's a lot.

Weber 41455 20 Pound Tank Adapter Hose for Use with Weber Q and Go-Anywhere Gas Grill Review

Weber 41455 20 Pound Tank Adapter Hose for Use with Weber Q and Go-Anywhere Gas Grillthe small screw on tanks work very well. But when using the adapter hose on a 20 lB tank the flame is too weak to grill, especially when the outside temp is in the 40s or lower.

I've tried slowly turning on the tank valve waiting a bit before lighting the grill, but the flame is still too low. I'll have to wait til summer before I can use the 20# tank with adapter hose again.

EDIT: After trying the procedure below I'm up and cooking again with full force even with it being 35 degress outside.

BYPASS INSTRUCTIONS
GAS GO ANYWHERE, WEBER Q + BABY Q
Since 1995, all regulators on gas barbecues have a safety device which restricts the gas flow in the event of a gas leak. You can inadvertently activate the safety device without having a gas leak. Typically, this occurs if you open the LP tank valve too rapidly, or if the valve + regulator assembly is in a slightly open position when opening the LP tank valve.
Your must remember when you are grilling you should always do the tank valve first and then the valve + regulator assembly when you start grilling or stop grilling. Never turn off the valve + regulator assembly before the tank. Gas is trapped in the valve + regulator assembly and adapter hose and the next time you turn on the tank, that residual gas in the line will back up and trigger the safety device.

Also, when you start grilling, you should open the tank valve V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W-L-Y, about ¼ turn at a time until it is all the way open before you turn on your valve + regulator assembly to light the grill even is it takes 30 seconds to a full minute. If you've just had your tank refilled, it has a lot more pressure in it at first than after you use it for awhile. That may trigger the safety device sometimes, too. These conditions can be recurring. If it happens again, then you will need to go through the reset procedure again.

If you do activate the gas regulator safety device, the barbecue will only reach temperatures between 250 and 300 degrees, even with the valve + regulator assembly on the HIGH setting.

TO RESET THE GAS REGULATOR SAFETY DEVICE:

Open the barbecue lid.
1.Close the LP tank valve.
2.Turn valve + regulator assembly to the OFF position.
3.Wait at least 5 minutes if the barbecue had been lit
4.Disconnect the adapter hose from the LP tank.
5.Turn valve + regulator assembly to the HIGH position.
6.Wait at least 2 minutes, then turn valve + regulator assembly to the OFF position.
7.Re-connect the adapter hose to the LP tank.

Weber 7521 Cooking Grate Review

Weber 7521 Cooking GrateMy Weber is about 5yrs old and the old porcelain grills were pretty worn and warped from the heat.I've had the new grates and they work fantastic. They don't stick and are easier to clean since the design is not interlaced like the porcelain grates. Its a bit early to say they will last as long or longer than the porcelain grates but they are off to a promising start.
I would highly recommend getting these, Its much cheaper then getting a whole new Weber Grill and it feels like you have a new grill by replacing the grates and flavoring bars.

Weber 3757001 Genesis E-320 Propane Grill, Green Review

Weber 3757001 Genesis E-320 Propane Grill, GreenI bought this grill 4th of July 2007. I have grilled on it at least 140 times. The regulator sprung a leak in April two days before my sons birthday when we were planning a cookout. I emailed Weber's customer service department with my dilemma and included my name and address. I didn't have my warranty number at the time because I had left the info at work. Weber tracked me down in their system by my name and address, email me back within an hour, and stated in the email that they had already shipped the replacement part overnight priority Fedex. It arrived 3 hours before the cookout. Fantastic grill and fantastic customer service. I will never buy anything but a Weber.

Weber 1710001 Summit S-420 Propane Gas Grill, Stainless Steel Review

Weber 1710001 Summit S-420 Propane Gas Grill, Stainless SteelI bought this grill for my recent let's say, milestone, birthday.I researched grills for over 2 months.I knew Weber was a good brand but wished to consider other options. My research always pointed back to "buy a Weber".Weber's customer service was always rated A-1, they've been bbq/grilling experts for years, and you know they'll be around in the future. The one kicker for the Summit S-420 model over a stainless Weber Genesis S-320 was a comment from a friend of mine with a nice stainless Jenn-Air model found at Lowes. He wished the rotisserie was positioned higher on the Jenn-Air.In my assessment of grills, I had never considered the importance of the rotisserie height. After looking at the Genesis S-320 and Jenn-Air models again, it became clear that a turkey or large roast might not work on the rotisserie of the other models. The Summit S-420 and other Summit grills solves this problem by providing a much higher rotisserie position. Add to that a much taller cover, and you'll see there is greater height for convection around whatever you're cooking.I've grilled hamburgers, salmon, T-bone steaks, and slow cooked smoked pork ribs - all to perfection. No need for a high end smoker feature that permanently reduces grill space - an aluminum foil tray with wood chips atop one of the burners works fine. The Snap-Jet individual burner ignition system was tricky at first.Once you actually read the instructions - Hey I'm a guy - you'll find the technology is easy and reliable.Quality is the final key to this grill. The stainless everything is impressive and high quality. The side-burner is more than an afterthought and mimics many high-end kitchen gas cook-tops.Even the doors of the storage area below are double sided for sturdiness.I usually have a minor stint of buyer's remorse after an expensive purchase.I have none. With this grill I can proudly say it's one of the best purchases/investments I've made in years!!!!

Weber 3747001 Genesis E-310 Propane Grill, Dark Green Review

Weber 3747001 Genesis E-310 Propane Grill, Dark GreenWhen it came time for me to buy a grill, I looked immediately to the Weber Genesis series, mainly because my family has always owned Webers and we've never been disappointed by them.My dad's prior Genesis grill lasted about 10 years before needing to be replaced, and likely would have lasted longer if it weren't for the harsh South Florida climate (the humid air down there is really rough on anything metal that's left outside).

I opted for the E-310 as I didn't need a side burner and didn't quite feel like paying up for the stainless steel model (which is nice, but hard to keep clean!).

This is a GREAT all around grill.IMO, there's nothing worse than a cheap gas grill - they don't maintain even heat, they don't get hot enough, and they often have the heat source too close to the food.I have a feeling a lot of the charcoal snobs out there (and I admit I used to be one myself) believe so ardently in charcoal's superiority partly because they've compared it only to a cheapo gas grill - guess what, it isn't the "rich smokey flavor" that makes charcoal grills great, it's the heat (they get hotter than most of the cheaper gas grills available) and the evenness of the heat. When buying a gas grill, you DO get what you pay for - and the Weber Genesis series is worth it.My Weber will heat to 600+ degrees, maintains even heat, and the heat source is far enough from the food to limit flare ups.

I've had this for about 2 weeks now and even I'm surprised how much I use it - almost every night (and THAT IMO is the main advantage of gas vs. charcoal, this thing is so convenient that I use it probably 5 times a week even though I live alone so I'm usually cooking for one). Thus far I've cooked steaks, pork chops, chicken breasts, and chicken wings on it (as well as sides like corn on the cob, asparagus, and new potatoes, all done on the grill of course), and it's ALL come out great.I'm very happy with it and I'm sure it'll only get better as the grill gets broken in and as I get more experienced using it.

If I've helped convince you to spring for the E-310, there's one thing you should consider (aside from whether to go stainless steel and whether to go with a side burner - those are both personal preferences) that you may not know about: there's a choice between cast iron and stainless still grill grates.I'm pretty sure the one offered on Amazon has the cast iron. Now, in most cases I think cast iron is great for cooking (it really holds the heat in better and gives a superior sear vs. other metals), HOWEVER cast iron does not hold up very well when left outside, especially if you live in a humid climate. Also, it's harder to clean. For this reason, if you live in a humid climate I'd recommend going for the version of the E-310 that has a stainless steel grill, you can find them if you look around. You can still get that cast iron sear when you want it by simply buying a Lodge cast iron skillet or griddle (available here on Amazon for < $20) and using it right on the Weber grill for certain dishes - I did this for a Filet Mignon the other night and it produced an excellent sear.

Overall, 5 stars for the Weber Genesis for a great cooking experience AND great Weber quality that should last you 10 years or more, if properly taken care of.

Weber 7402 Charcoal Rails Review

Weber 7402 Charcoal RailsThe Weber 7402 Charcoal Rails work as advertized. They are easy to install and remove yet fit firm and do not come out unintended.Simply engineered by the same people that make the charcoal grate so it fits perfectly. There are no installation instructions or diagram so for those that are dense as I was for about 5 minutes you hook the outer most cross rail and wedge the end opposite the hooks between the grates. This is for an 18 ½ inch grill so the 22 ½ inch may not be the same.As far as the practicality of the use on an 18 ½ inch grill the best you can do is one medium sized rack of ribs or a very well trimmed brisket.Flank steak and skirt steak fit perfect.Whole fish one medium fits fine as well.

Weber 7532 Cast Iron Griddle Review

Weber 7532 Cast Iron GriddleI took a chance and purchased this griddle about 1 month ago and after using it several times I can highly recommend it. Prior to using it for cooking I seasoned the griddle with shortening. This is easy to do and you can find some very good websites on how to care for and use a cast iron griddle. Thus far I have cooked bacon, eggs and pancakes using this griddle with excellent results each time. It fits perfectly on my Weber E-310 gas grill.

Weber 1421001 Performer Charcoal Grill, Black Review

Weber 1421001 Performer Charcoal Grill, BlackWhile I love my Genesis S-320, I decided I wanted to get in to charcoal grilling when time allows. Without question, I was going to buy a Weber, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to go with the One-Touch Gold, One-Touch Platinum (knowing I'd still buy accessories for both) or the Performer.

What really sold me was the propane ignition and the cart. Having this much workspace outside is invaluable, and I just don't trust larger items like turkey to the tables on the One-Touch Platinum or the Weber 7413 Work Table that I would have got for the Gold. And when you compare the price of the Platinum to the Performer the only reason not to get the Performer is if you're completely uninterested in the propane ignition.

Ordering from Amazon was the usual experience. With Prime, my Performer was on my porch two days after I ordered it via UPS. Despite being nearly 100 pounds, this doesn't need to go through one of the local logistics companies that are usually used with big items, so that was a huge plus in my book.

After inspecting the box for damage, the first thing I looked for was where the Performer was made. As I thought (and in spite of what some have said on different grilling forums) it clearly says "Designed and engineered in the USA" right above "Made in the USA". So, yes, the Performer is (as of April 2010, when Amazon shows this model number as "new") made in the United States.

This being my third Weber grill, I didn't expect the pieces to be pristine, and wasn't shocked to see that there were a few minor paint scrapes, despite the box showing absolutely zero evidence of being mishandled. This is the same experience as when I bought my first Genesis at a local store, and my next Genesis, and... Basically, if you're expecting every piece of a Weber grill to be scratch-free out of the box, you're going to be disappointed, so be prepared.

Assembly was pretty straightforward. As they often are, the Weber manual was easy to follow and well illustrated. All you need to put this together is a hammer (for the wheels), a Phillips screwdriver, and a 3/8" wrench. I put it together by myself in about 30 minutes with no problems at all. I was mildly amused (and at the same time, a bit annoyed) that the bottom of the kettle has post holes for legs. The only thing that's different on the kettle between the Performer and One-Touch Gold is two metal flaps that let you mount it to the cart.

The Performer can use the "fat green" propane canisters that you usually see on camping equipment, as well as the type of canisters you'd usually use with a torch kit. I was quite disappointed to discover that the redesigned Performer still uses the old red-button "spark-plug" ignition, instead of the electric battery-based ignition used on all of their other grills.

That brings me to the loss of a star. There are a few other design problems with the Performer that are disappointing. The first, which I haven't seen depicted in any picture of this item here or on Weber's site, is that the propane tank hangs down below the control panel. It looks kind of chintzy, and frankly, at this price, it shouldn't. The other design annoyance is with the holder for the top of the kettle. It's almost all metal, and it's quite rough. The first time you use it, you're going to put some nice silver scratches on your black lid. I'm experimenting with high-temp silicone on the rough edges, to see if that solves the problem.

Another warning: At the time of this review, Weber's site has a mix of pictures for the current Performer. Some depict the lid with a small, removable thermometer on the handle. Some (correctly) depict the more Genesis-like thermometer mounted between the handle and edge of the lid. Additionally, Amazon's picture depicts the Thermoset surface as black, it's really more of a grey color.

All things being equal, it's a very nice grill. You get the sturdy cart, One-Touch cleaning system with ash catcher, hinged cooking grate, Char-Basket holders, gas ignition, and a place to keep your charcoal.

Is it a crazy-good value? Well... that's hard to say. If you start off with a One-Touch Silver or Gold and start adding accessories, the price isn't unreasonable. If anything, it's like buying most of your accessories in one box. But if you don't care a lot about the ignition or big cart, you're probably much better off getting a One-Touch.

Weber 7526 Cooking Grate Review

Weber 7526 Cooking GrateA leading cooking publication explained the benefits of having a cast iron grill and, in a nutshell, it's all about heat retention.

Recently, I had the misfortune of having the original steel grates on my Weber completely rust through and decided there had to be a better alternative. After a little research, I found that stainless steel replacements were readily available and was going to go with them.As I was doing my research on Amazon, I saw that there were cast iron units also available and decided to research a little further. What I learned was that it takes a temperature of around 300 degrees to brown meat and that cooking drops the temperture of the grates rapidly. For stainless steel, it took about 15 minutes to preheat a grill to 500 degrees.Once the meat was added, it took only 2 minutes for the grate temperature to drop down to 300 degrees. With the cast iron, preheat time increased to 21 minutes, but the grates stayed above 300 degrees for over five minutes. In my own experience with the cast iron, the extra time made a huge difference in how well the grill cooked both burgers and steaks, adding nice grill marks and enhanced flavor.

Cast iron will eventually rust, but these grates are heavy and are enameled so I think they will last alot longer than the original steel, even stainless will degrade over time. You should always preheat your grill and these cast iron grates will make a difference.

Weber 7553 Genesis Series Cover Review

Weber 7553 Genesis Series CoverWhen I purchased my new Weber Genesis grill I wanted to get a nice cover to protect it.Amazon had it listed as backordered so I went to my local HD to buy this Weber grill cover. When I open the box I immediately noticed the nice material quality.Put the cover on my new grill and it was a perfect fit.The velcro straps hold the cover on tight so it will never blow off in a wind storm. Then I noticed two large mesh vents, one above each side table. It didn't make sense to me, but hey I'm sure Weber knows what they are doing. Then a few days later it rained on my new cover. The next day I went out to pull off the cover and both side tables had large water puddles on them. That's when I found out that when water collects on the side tables, it will drain into the cabinet below the grill.Frustrated, I went to Amazon again and read the reviews on the cover.Several people mentioned a rear vent but none mentioned any side vents. So I purchased the cover from Amazon and waited several weeks for it.I was excited to see on the box pictures that it didn't have side vents. As I pulled the cover out my excitement turned to disappointment that it had side vents and no rear vent. This cover is useless with the side vents.I will be returning it.If this is Weber's new design, I will be purchasing a generic grill cover.5 stars for the cover durability and velcro straps, 0 stars for the side vent design.

Update 11/09/07: By trial and error I was able to find a Weber grill cover with a rear vent at a different HD.This is a much better design than the side vent version.Unfortunately, you cannot tell which version you are getting by only looking at the box.The boxes are identical down to the date code markings.

Weber 3752001 Genesis E-320 Propane Gas Grill, Copper Review

Weber 3752001 Genesis E-320 Propane Gas Grill, CopperI have the EP320 - cost an extra $50 to have all stainless steel insides - cooking grates and burner covers - and it was worth it. Nice to cook on and easy to clean with a brass brush while the grill is still warm. Turkey, roasts, steaks, corn on the cob, beans, potatoes, etc. all come out great. Must buys are the rotisserie and the cover. Takes about 2 hours to assemble but it is not complicated. Go to Weber's website and try some of their recipes and methods. They work!

My previous grill was a Ducane and it doesn't even come close to this Weber. The Weber has more heating power and much more even heating and better design like putting the propane tank in from the front rather than the rear. The built in scale to show how full your propane tank is was a nice addition.

Buy this grill - you will be very happy you did.

Weber 7536 Flavorizer Bars Review

Weber 7536 Flavorizer BarsI had these flavorizer bars for years on a Weber.Since 2002 I have gone through two sets. Both times they ended up disintegrating. These work well in helping to reduce flare ups, adding the creation of smoke from dripping juices to add more flavor, and help protect your burners from getting clogged up.The only downside is that the porcelain coating comes off after a few years which will lead to massive rust problems and you will need to replace them.

Tired of that I finally upgraded to the stainless bars which perform just as well but they don't rust.Save yourself a few bucks later by spending a little more if you can afford spending the extra $10-$15 on the stainless bars.

Weber 3870001 Genesis S-310 Natural Gas Grill, Stainless Steel Review

Weber 3870001 Genesis S-310 Natural Gas Grill, Stainless SteelI have had 5 or so BBQ's in the last 26 yrs. The cheap ones like Charm Glow only lasted a year or so. About 10 years ago I got a Weber Sprit BBQ and it last until this year. I was able to rebuild the flavor bars and grill twice in that 10 year period. Weber is great in that you can get parts for old BBQ's. However, I live near the beach and BBQ a lot. The Sprit had an aluminum box and porclin coated iron parts for the grill and flavor bars. These parts rusted out and /or corroded. So this time I wanted a BBQ that was ALL stainless. In looking arround I found several makes that claimed to be stainless but had many nonstainless parts. The Weber Gennesis was expensive but is ALL stainless. Assemby was fairly easy but the diagrams (no writen instructions)take some studing at each step. Total time to assemble was 2.5 hr. This grill is well made and does a terrific job of BBQing. It is not cheap but I belive it is worth the money in the long run. The S310 is a little big for my use and I would have liked a two burner Sprit sized BBQ but they do not make that size in stainless.

Weber 3742001 Genesis E-310 Propane Grill, Copper Review

Weber 3742001 Genesis E-310 Propane Grill, CopperSummary -- a great grill with even cooking across the grill, gets hot (over 600 deg F), with a bit of clunky charm and plenty of accessories.

OK -- I've had a very expensive grill (>$2k) for the past 5 years, and traded it for furniture when I moved. After researching grills, the great unwashed mass and periodicals indicated that Weber Grills had even temperatures across the grill. That was important because my former grill was hot, hot, hot but very uneven in temps across the grill. My only concern with the Weber was, "Is it hot enough?"

Quick Answer -- yes -- it climbed to 550 F fairly quickly and was still climbing. That was important because I want to grill Pizza.

Assembly - I hope you have your own hex set because the one supplied takes time. An auto screwdriver is a helpful addition. This is a 2 person bonding experience for assembly, at least for me, as I'm easily bored. The directions (pictures) are not bad but doesn't anyone write a manual using words inour native tongue? Assembly may take 1.5 hr +/-depending on your do it yourself talents.

First time use was steaks -- the grill is hot! and sears well -- they turned out perfectly - medium rare; Second time was chicken; next was scallops. They all turned out delicious and the grill is a snap to use.

I recommend the grill cover and adding the smokers kit if you want to slow cook ribs, chicken, etc. I laid a smoke box on the Weber twice and the grill produced fine smoke. I think the Weber kit will smoke the chips faster and hotter since it lays on the flavor grates.

The cons?OK -- it is clunky looking compared to my uber-expensive grill. But then, it was $649 (LP Version) and cooks better than Mr. Uber-Expensive.

Overall, I am very satisfied with this grill and highly recommend it.

Weber 3770001 Genesis S-310 LP Gas Grill, Stainless Steel Review

Weber 3770001 Genesis S-310 LP Gas Grill, Stainless SteelI grill almost everyday in summer and quite a bit even in the winter. So I tend to be a bit hard on my grills and I had never really spent much on my grills and I replace every 2-4 years. This time around though, I fell in love with some of the newer stainless steel grills out there and on some of them it appears that you get more than from Weber: more grilling space, or more BTUs, or just bigger. So I decided to go digging a bit.

I checked consumer reports and this Weber grill is rated the #1 grill out there for the following reasons:

a) very even heating
b) quick heating
c) very solid construction
d) low propensity for flareups

Consumer reports brought out some of the more glaring shortfalls to other grills that were not easily apparent then blinded by all that stainless steel at the local warehouse store.Armed with some consumer reports data I went back to the local stores that have these grills and I started to see what they were saying: plastic where Weber was aluminium, solid doors vs thin with empty backing, open cabinets where Weber has fully enclosed cabinet, cast steel casing where Weber's is Aluminium.Try as I might, I couldn't find the exact model I wanted so after much deliberation I bought the Webber Genesis S-310 from Amazon.I always order from Amazon but I was a bit hesitant to order due to a review of someone getting a dented grill. But since I really wanted the S-310 and I trust Amazon, I went ahead and ordered and everything arrived perfect (Thank you Amazon and Eagle - whoever you are).

The Bad:
1) It arrived in a box factory disassembled into a bunch of parts

The Good:
1) It was very well packaged in the box (additionally, most stainless parts had a plastic film to keep from scratching)
2) It shipped and arrived very quickly (within 3 days of ordering - standard shipping)
3) No dings or scratches on the grill or even on the box (Eagle did a great job on this one)
4) The fact that the grill was disassembled - which allowed me to get to know the grill as I assembled it and raelly appreciate the construction
5) Instructions were clear
6) I have to say that in putting this grill together took about one hour of work and it really had me appreciate the strength of Weber's construction on this product. Its frankly amazing how well constructed this grill is.
7) Construction of this grill is made of stainless steel and cast aluminium with plastic only in the wheels (which are very tough), hose, knobs and a couple of small fittings.
8) The undercarriage is enclosed on all four sides with gorgeous stainless doors which are thick and fully whose back is also stainless.
9)Many details were taken into account, there are adjustments so that the knobs are fully centered.
10) There's a chain to hold a lighting match and the lighting hole is neatly placed on the front right corner of the grill although the grill has electronic ignition.
11) The temperature guage was placed in the front center of the grill and is large and easy to see.
12) The knobs are located on top of the grill which is fantastic if you have small children. It makes it much harder for children to reach the knobs and turn them
13) It doesn't come with a tank (I have 3 so that wasn't a problem)
14) Comes with a drip pan
15) It doesn't have brickettes but comes with very highly angled triangular baffles to cover the burners...the angle of the baffles lessens the likelihood of flareups because grease falls down before it catches on fire
16) Very good warranty on all materials and workmanship
17) It has a tank measure so you know when you're low on propane
18) This grill gets hot.I turned it on high and turned around for a few minutes and it was up to 650 degrees and the flavorizer bars were glowing bright red hot....wow -- never had a grill do that before!
19) Very even heating. The burners run left to right on this grill vs front to back.Always in the past, I've had a problem with the back of my grill being hotter than the front. With this grill the heating is more even. There are pros and cons of left to right arrangement of burners vs front to back and probably beyond this review just be aware potential buyer --- left to right works very well for me and I find I can do indirect cooking nicely too.

Grilling with this product is fantastic. This is the best grill I have ever owned and I'm glad I own a Weber Genesis S-310.You might find cheaper grills or bigger grills for the same money or higher BTUs but overall, I think you'll be hard pressed to find a "better grill" out there.

I was apprehensive at ordering such a large product from Amazon but amazed at how fast I got it and the store perfect condition it arrived in.One very happy Weber Owner and Amazon shopper.

Product Description:
No more annual overhauls, Weber's Genesis grill is built for high-performance grilling for years to come. The Genesis S-310 gas grill features an enclosed cart with stainless steel doors and handles for easy, scratch-free cleaning. A stainless steel shroud with a center-mounted thermometer is bordered with shiny, cast-aluminum end caps.
The cooking system, rated at 42,000 Btu's, includes 3 seamless stainless steel burners. For easy starts, an electronic Crossover ignition system lights all three burners in succession with the push of a button. Weber's porcelain-enameled Flavorizer bars eliminate grease-fueled flare-ups that often occur with standard lava rocks and ceramic briquettes. Fats and juices are vaporized when they hit the angled bars and quickly sizzle away, adding delicious, smoky barbecue flavor rather than cauterizing flames.
Sturdy cooking grates feature 7-millimeter stainless steel rods. The primary cooking area measures 507 square inches. And, the unit's handy warming rack measures 130 square inches for a total cooking area of 637 square inches. Other features include 6 tool holders, a precision fuel gauge, 2 stainless steel work surfaces, 2 heavy-duty front locking casters and 2 heavy-duty back swivel casters. The purchase includes a cookbook and 10-foot flexible hose, and is covered by a limited manufacturer warranty.

Weber 4521001 Spirit E-310 Natural Gas Grill, Black Review

Weber 4521001 Spirit E-310 Natural Gas Grill, BlackI was going to buy this exact same grill from Home Depot online, until they infomed me that shipping was going to run me $75.00! Amazon shipped it for free! I wanted to post a rant on HD's website warning everyone that they are paying high shipping costs unnecessarily, but their guidelines don't allow mention of any competitors.
The grill itself is great! Only took an hour to assemble, would have assembled faster if I hadn't gone slow in order to get it right the first time. Cooked steaks for the first time on it tonight, and there were no hot spots of any kind. There are still occasional flare-ups, but I don't think you can get away from that with any grill...and I've had several.
All in all, an excellent experience and great product! Thanks Amazon!
